That was a wild one!!!

Hi Everyone……hope you all got through Saturday night OK, it was a wild one! without any damage to you or your properties. As you know we lost the poly tunnel the other week, now the frames are completely twisted even though it had no cover on.
The Ducks loved just sitting in the pond, while Chris (my son) and I checked everything at 11:30pm but I had to hang on to him lol otherwise he would have blown away it was very gusty indeed. I was watching various weather stations and the worst point was 105 mph……even though some were showing 115 not sure if these things are really accurate. If you can better that let me know.

Hyper-Boreanon 18 Jan 2009 at 11:10 am 1I know we escaped the worst of the winds over this side but we have had a bit of damage. We have an old wormery bin which we use to make liquid fertiliser. The lid was weighted down with a concrete block. Lid is now torn and twisted and said block 4 feet away. Sadly it went through the cold frame glass en-route.
Flying Cat 2on 18 Jan 2009 at 5:58 pm 2It’ll be a rethink on the polytunnel option then…
Bob Nelson, tomato/veg/strawberry grower up here has large sod dykes around his and his are in a relatively sheltered spot, using the term loosely…maybe an underground pollytunnel?
Jillon 18 Jan 2009 at 7:43 pm 3I think the answer is a brick polytunnel, FC. With no windows. The underground polytunnel would normally be called a “cellar”
soapladyon 18 Jan 2009 at 8:03 pm 4My poor little brown duck lost not only her duckhouse, but also, as I discovered when I went to move it back to its normal place, her four perfect eggs too … Completely stonecold, poor darling …
Barneyon 18 Jan 2009 at 8:39 pm 5Pollytunnel or Mollytunnel?
fredblog51on 18 Jan 2009 at 10:01 pm 6LOL, I think I will give up the poly idea and a bunker sounds better, Oh Linda……..I’m so sorry about those eggs, it would have been great to see duckling’s about with the adults Ducks, hopefullt it will happen again.
Flying Cat 2on 19 Jan 2009 at 12:16 am 7A dead cert I’d say, knowing the propensities of drakes to…you know…errr…
Barneyon 19 Jan 2009 at 6:29 pm 8“Duck”?
Flying Cat 2on 19 Jan 2009 at 7:41 pm 9That’s the very word. I like a good rhyme…
Barneyon 20 Jan 2009 at 8:55 pm 10Great minds think alike, EffCee, and you know the other half, of course.
Flying Cat 2on 21 Jan 2009 at 4:38 pm 11I say Fred I like your New Look, the dropped hemline, the fuller skirt, the cinched waist…now all you need is AN AVATAR!
fredblog51on 21 Jan 2009 at 6:15 pm 12FC……I have been looking, BUT HOW DO I DO IT I have looked !!!!!
mjcon 21 Jan 2009 at 6:58 pm 13You need an avatar like a brick to the head, Fred. I hope you never find how to do it. Good heavens, it must be the island air.
Flying Cat 2on 21 Jan 2009 at 7:16 pm 14Purrlease purrlease don’t ask me. It took a couple of hours due to technological inexactitude! If you ask Les nicely he will tell you. But for any sakes go to his tutorial on Help Me Blog first or he’ll be putting salt on my tail!
http://help.islandblogging.co.uk/2009/01/13/grab-yourself-an-avatar/
And good luck!
If you want to fill in all the wee grey men, go to your dashboard; then ‘Settings’; then ‘Discussion’. Go to the bottom* and ‘Default Avatar’ (purrlease excuse Twessian language*) and click on the one you dislike least.
And remember to click on the ‘Save Changes’ box before leaving!
soapladyon 21 Jan 2009 at 7:17 pm 15hee hee hee, mjc, thanks for making me giggle …!!
little brown duck is in the duckhouse again now, so perhaps she’s laying herself another brood … it’s *far* too early in the year, so I think she must be a bit … confused …
This may be because she was ‘retrieved’ by a gundog two days ago …
Flying Cat 2on 21 Jan 2009 at 7:18 pm 16PS Just ignore him. He doesn’t understand. You’d think appearing on Tws’ blog as something with a paper bag over its head would spur him on!
mjcon 22 Jan 2009 at 11:37 am 17Thanks, but no thanks.
fredblog51on 22 Jan 2009 at 8:25 pm 18OK Found it, now you have nice coloured graphics, instead of Shadow men……..I think this looks better than having my ‘Boat Race’ (Face) all over your blogs
Flying Cat 2on 23 Jan 2009 at 5:53 pm 19I find it hard to agree MrFredBlog, but can only admire your excellent taste!
Hyper-Boreanon 24 Jan 2009 at 1:17 pm 20Going back to your last question. Small weather stations seem to be pretty accurate these days when it comes to measuring spot winds and maxima. They are perhaps not so good at measuring the mean values. So your 105 or 115mph maximum wind speeds look fairly good. I believe Stornoway Airport had maxima in the 90s of knots, which would be in excess of 100mph. I would be wary of accepting some of the mean wind speed values which I have seen reported. For the MET Office records, which meet international criteria, the anemometer has to be properly sited and the damping and averaging of the data must meet strict conditions. In general this means the anemometer being 10 metres above ground in a well exposed location not close to buildings, the mean is measured over 10 minute intervals and the equipment is very carefully calibrated. To be honest you would not notice much difference between a 90 knot gust and a 100 knot one when it blew you over.
